Other published opinions

Age Good Food Guide 2009 Score: 13.5/20 "Push past the blonde hair, big sunglasses and even bigger handbags and you'll find a trendy open-plan bistro at the hotel's rear that's less pretentious than the 'look at moi' main bar"

Herald Sun Bob Hart, 1-11-08 "FEW discoveries are more pleasing than that of a pub close to home that offers, on top of other good things pubs offer, terrific food. This should be obvious to residents of Melbourne's inner south, who are discovering that the tucker at the Albert Park Hotel is every bit as stylish as the spiffed-up interior of the place. They are further discovering, as a mate and I did last week, that there is something very stimulating about the ability of an accomplished pub chef to range across a broad spectrum of culinary delights."

The Age John Lethlean, 5-8-2008 Score: 12/20 "And so to the food at this funky, young-at-heart pub, relaunched several years ago after a major refit. The chef is Cath Kalka, a South Melbourne veteran who worked for years at O'Connell's down the road, and her menu here is peppered with Asian, Middle Eastern and Mediterranean flavours. It suggests a passion for assertive flavours: harissa here, chorizo there, saffron with this, sweet and sour with that, and a touch of Sichuan-spiced something else for good measure. The food backs up the suggestion."

The Age Dani Valent, 2-10-2007 "The year-old fit-out by design firm Six Degrees appeals with its trademark retro-modern meld. Funky cutlery, stemless wine glasses and linen napkins underline the message: this is a proper restaurant but it's OK to have fun. Chef Cath Kalka worked at O'Connell's in South Melbourne so she's no stranger to the gastropub schtick. At the bar, beer and bubbles are chased with sashimi, tortillas and jamon with asparagus. In the dining room, the offerings confidently pluck ingredients from all over to create a spunky mod-Melbourne menu. Execution is good. Grilled cuttlefish is dredged with paprika and served with olives, chorizo and almond-and-capsicum pesto."

Age Good Food Guide 2008 Score: 13/20 "The reborn Albert Park Hotel comes with a notable pedigree - ownership links to Richmond's Public House and a refit by hip architectural firm Six Degrees"

The Age Larissa Dubecki, 24-5-2007 "Ticking the box marked "trendy'', there's a new bistro at the rear, a lounge upstairs, and plenty of space in the free-flowing front bar with polished concrete floor. It opens onto street-side tables perfect for preening and perving."

Herald Sun Stephen Downes, 1-05-07 Score: 14/20 "Daring A stylistically, the Albert Park Hotel serves middling and better."

The Age, A2, 26/6/04,Melinda Houston,'This handsome old-style corner pub has long been the Friday night hangout for Albert Park's lawyers, spin doctors and ad execs. It may not be quite the scene of dating'n'mating frenzy it was in the 80s,but the vibe of conviviality lingers.Solidly middle class and unthreatening in every way,it's smart without being intimidating, has a respectable if not inspiring range of beers and wines, and they make a decent cocktail. The food is equally reliable.'
