Mietta's Review
Old Carlisle St is gentrifying fast as the modern cafes force their tables out onto the footpath. New amongst these newcomers is Batch, rather smoother than some of its neighbours. It's owned by a couple of New Zealanders who make the most of the produce, including the coffee, of their homeland. Excellent coffee, the food is good and a little different, and the wine list New Zealand.

Other published opinions

The Age Cheap Eats 2008 "Food writers love Batch (owned by Kiwi Jason Chan) but thankfully the attention hasn't cramped its unpretentious vibe"

The Age Cheap Eats 2007 "Bach (n. pronounced 'batch'): a small holiday home in New Zealand. With a come-what-may charm and homely Kiwi-inspired dishes, Batch's owner, Jason Chan, brings a little of the 'long white cloud' to Balaclava."

The Age Cheap Eats 2006 Batch owner and our 2005 barista of the year Jason Chan isn't the type to rest on his laurels. Coffees in his recycled-chic one-roomer are still perfectly pitched, the latte foam swept with a sweet New Zealand fern design.

Herald Sun Donna Coutts Cafe 11/2/06 "Friendly, efficiently run cafe serving beautiful coffee and imaginative, satisfying brunch dishes. Very, very good."

The Age Cheap Eats 2005 "Chan chooses the espresso blend and bottled organic juices from his New Zealand homeland because they're good."

The Age Espresso 22/2/05 Matt Preston "Batch has a slightly more organic but polished feel than some of its rivals on the strip. The service is young, sassy and sparky, while the menu boasts the sort of honest, simple but slightly inspired combinations that make Melbourne the goddamn cafe capital of the goddamn world."
