Mietta's Review
A Lygon St institution, the place where many tasted grana and tallegio for the first time. Now you can go beyond the shop to a small, clean, bright area at the back and enjoy very good panini made up from the shop's products. All white, with its stools, tiles and benches. There are also a few tables outside on the footpath. Inside has its own quiet and pungent charm, the delicious odours of all those cheeses, salamis and pickles hang in the air.

Other published opinions

The Age Cheap Eats 2008 "For those who take their antipasto seriously, this institution is a one-stop shop"

The Age Cheap Eats 2007 "No false cheer at Lygon Food Store, just the best antipasto for miles around. Make your selections to fill a baguette or panini and rub shoulders with hordes of carlton workers, students and Lygon Street shoppers, or perch on a high stool in the deli's rear."

The Age Cheap Eats 2006 Students, suits and stylish mothers all brave Melbourne's unpredictable seasons ... to partake of this foodstore's fine victuals.

The Age Cheap Eats 2005 "FIRST impressions may suggest this Italian deli-cum-cafe is little more than a jumped-up sandwich shop, but that's before you bite into a chewy panini filled with bocconcini, roast vegies and other first-class antipasti."

The Age Cheap Eats 2004 "ON any given day at Lygon Food Store, you'll find a group of Italian cronies discussing the weather, the horses and their daughters' weddings All the while they're sipping steaming short blacks or macchiatos and ordering bruschetta"

The Age,Epicure,29/6/04,Justine Costigan,'Here, the speedy Italian staff make your roll to order and understand the judiciious art of just the right amount of ingrediants...Inhale the aroma of freshly roasted coffee while you wait.'

The Foodies' Guide 2004,Allan Campion & Michele Curtis,'Lygon Food Store has been an institution in this most Italian of Melbourne food streets for 40 years. Its original strength was imported Italian cheeses, and there are some people who would go nowhere else to buy their parmigiano reggiano. Now there are also French,Swiss and a small selection of popular local chesses. The antipasto range is huge and always has something new to offer, such as roasted artichokes, but at all times includes olives, eggplant, sweet peppers, baby onions, wild mushrooms and sun-dried tomatoes. There are dried pasta as well as oils, vinegars and fruit pastes from the Valley Produce Company. Perhaps what we love most about this store is sitting out the front drinking espresso and enjoying something from the simple menu, such as the minstrone soup in winter or bruschetta in summer.'
