Mietta's Review
Low key, reliable and homely, Trotters is a small haven from everything red, white and green on Lygon Street. Favoured by Carlton residents and Melbourne Uni students for breakfast, a meal with the kids or one all alone. There are many vegetarian options, and the menu is modern cafe with Italian influences, all done well.

Other published opinions

The Age Cheap Eats 2007 "You all meet in Lygon Street, but only one person wants pasta. Somebody else wants a burger and the kids need to be fed quick. Solution: Trotters. Scan the blackboard menu, crammed between old packing crates, and you might find a homely lentil burger with hummus and salad; spaghetti topped with tuna, beans and lemon; or an honourable caesar salad with a proper coddled egg."

The Age Cheap Eats 2006 This must be the little piggy that went to market, such are their generous serves of no-fuss Italian standards. Urbane empty-nesters, dishevelled academics and students squeeze behind timber tables

The Age Cheap Eats 2005 "AMONG many self-proclaimed Lygon Street institutions, long-living Trotters is the real deal. Opening early and closing late, it's a place where quick snacks constantly evolve into three-course meals."

The Foodies' Guide 2004,Allan Campion & Michele Curtis,'Trotters is bustling and busy, but the friendly staff will always fit you in somewhere.Number one here is the eggs Benedict, followed closely by the homemade baked beans on toast or the porridge in winter.Top Grinders coffee too.'

Herald Sun, citystyle, 2/12/03, Michele Curtis,'Melbourne's top 10 brekkies.'

The Saturday Age, A2, Food&Wine, John Weldon, 8/3/03. One of the few remaining traditional Lygon St cafes. The hearty pastas are provided by the adjacent Donnini's.
