Mietta's Review
A priceless drive through Eltham, Kangaroo Ground, Christmas Hills to Yarra Glen, is the only way to approach De Bortoli. Lunch in what could be considered fine surroundings in a jolly fine, almost homely atmosphere. And when you get there, fab views from the balconies. The vineyard's own wines to be sampled along with some excellent modern Australian dishes from new young chef, Cameron Cansdell, who has lifted the quality of the food

Other published opinions

Herald Sun Dining Out, Stephen Downes, 12/9/06 Score: 12/20 "Every savoury recipe ends with "check the seasoning" It ought to be written around the walls of De Bortoli's kitchen. The culinary team's obvious skills were betrayed by salt. Dishes from the a la carte selection tend to be a little more complex than the Sunday lunch selections The wine list is cheap and representative, but contains only De Bortoli wines."

Herald Sun Eat, Bob Hart, 10-6-06 "WHEN next you eat at De Bortoli, one of our very best Yarra valley destinations, remember to say "cheese".Because while all the tucker here is terrific - just what we need to sustain us during our exhausting wine explorations - the cheese is miraculous. There is a reason: master cheesemaker Richard Thomas, the man behind some of the finest cheeses made in Australia, has set up shop - literally."

The Age Good Food Guide 2006 score 13/20 "One of the stayers of the valley, De Bortoli doesn't owe its longevity to showiness - in fact, the restaurant's interior could do with a spruce up. Happily, the rich, rustic Italian food shows no signs of complacency, thanks to young gun chef Cameron Cansdell, who has added polish since arriving in 2004."

The Age Good Food Guide 2005 score 13/20 "THIS steadfast vineyard restaurant's frescoed walls and Roman columns speak of efforts to create a pocket of Italy in the Yarra Valley The thoughtful menu is where the Italian theme shines brightest, though with classic pasta and meat foundations tricked up with distinctly modern trappings."

AGFG 2004, score 13/20, restaurant connected with winery

Gourmet Traveller Restaurant Guide Australia 2004,'This well-established restaurant pleases both serious wine tourists and happy-go-lucky daytrippers with its good wine and food in a pleasant, homely setting. ... All honest northern Italian food, a bustling atmosphere and cheerily efficient waiters.'
