Mietta's Review
A groovy stayer on the fickle Brunswick St strip. Owner chef Mitsuru Hoshino has been there since 1988. A mainly Western clientele comes to this little restaurant. There are many locals who like to both eat in and to order takeaway from here.

The Age Good Food Guide 2006 score 13/20 "Akari might be in boho Brunswick Street, but it remains a straightforward neighbourhood restaurant serving up good-value, unpretentious food. Lacquered tables, polished boards, aubergine feature walls and a panel of black tiles behind the sushi counter put it firmly in the 1990s school of 'contemporary' Japanese restaurant design."

The Age A2 The Good Life Melinda Houston 2/7/05 "Just a couple of doors down from Kazen, and peacefully co-existing, is another Brunswick Street stalwart, and yes, another Japanese cafe. Like Kazen the decor is smart, simple and unpretentious. The service is brisk and cheerful. And the food is incredible value."
