Mietta's Review
More friendly than cool this rather Brunswick St cafe inhabits a shopfront in Pin Oak Cres. It too clean to be grungy (this is Flemington after all) but it does have that slightly pre-loved feeling of Fitzroy. Food is very cafe - breakfasts, focaccias, burgers (Thai) - at expected prices. Coffee is a big part of the business. The clientele is local and regular.

The Age Cheap Eats 2009 "Pepper is a Flemington stayer. Its riders may have changed but new owners haven't dissuaded the hordes who pile in for a caffeine hit, to dine, or to simply kick back with a glass of wine"
The Age Cheap Eats 2008 "Flemington's style star is rising but diversity is still its hallmark. At Pepper, post-yoga mums hang with septuagenarians who happily coexist with grungy twentysomethings munching on marinated mushie-and-smoked-ham sandwiches"
The Age Dani Valent, 5-3-2007 "If colours set a mood, this corner cafe is one cheery venue. The floorboards are warm and honey-toned, the old-school wooden chairs are a happy orange and plane trees cast a limey gleam over pavement tables. The crowd is colourful too: regulation black is seen mostly on the painted timber tables. Customers tend to be in their 20s (as are the staff) but there's a fair sprinkling of little kids turning muffins into crumbs and juice into puddles, many of them corralled into the back room where banquettes and highchairs make for family-friendly dining."
The Age Cheap Eats 2007 "with chipper staff. Favourites include Pepper's signature smoked salmon, grilled tomato and sauteed spinach on latkes (potato pancakes), and the all-inclusive 'breakfast of champions' (a marathon event with heaped trimmings)."
The Age Cheap Eats 2006 When scenes from Aussie soap Last Man Standing were filmed nearby, the gallant little shopping strip leapt from up-and-coming to next-big-thing. Whatever the buzz, Pepper continues to serve up breakfasts
Herald Sun Cafe Culture Donna Coutts 14/6/05 score 15/20 "Tasty breakfast food that comes with friendly service. A deserved local favourite."
The Age Cheap Eats 2005 "DESIGNER T-shirted staff, lo-fi beats and simple, speedy grub welcome to Flemington's Fitzroy quarter. Pepper is championing big brekkies in the west"

The cheap to mid market Laksa King is in a decidely grungy Flemington mall. Great wonton filled laksa and other Malaysian dishes.
