Mietta's Review
Phones may have come off our kitchen walls to fit in our pockets, and Mars is closer than it has ever been, but the Victoria Market hasn't changed since the 70's and neither have many of the small business that surround it. Or at least Maria Trattoria certainly hasn't. Maria is still in the kitchen and Daniella, her daughter, looks after the floor, and the suits still love this place for lunch. Big serves of Italian home style meals are served, perfect fodder for that wheeler dealer meeting, and lets not exclude the non-professional clientele. It's also a wonderful spot to stop and refuel after a gruelling morning's shopping down the road.

Other published opinions

The Age Cheap Eats 2008 "Maria's Trattoria is a comforting relic of a bygone age. Big chains try to emulate the appeal of traditional family restaurants like this, but they're missing a crucial ingredient: Mama, whose welcoming embrace has kept the faithful happy for two decades"

The Age Cheap Eats 2007 "Maria's Trattoria has the casual air of a family restaurant that's lasted over 20 years. Enormous portions of home-style Italian fare hold few surprises but are as warm and hearty as mama and papa's service."

The Age Cheap Eats 2006 Big Italian welcome, big menu and an even bigger serve of rich bolognese - and that's just for starters. ... Supplement the basic wine list with something of your own and then soak up the atmosphere pics of the old country and oodles of conviviality from the staff

The Age Cheap Eats 2005 "NOSTALGIC for those family-owned Italian restaurants of your childhood? Hanker no more. Maria's is like a time capsule - right down to brick arches and white walls, bucolic landscapes and the sound of pots and pans being bandied about in the kitchen."

The Age, A2,3/4/04,Matt Preston,'Here the nonna motto of "you'll know how much I love you by how much I feed you" still lives even with the entree-sized pastas and risottos...Not flash but a very grounding experience.'
