Mietta's Review
Resting on Emerald Hill like a big meatball on top of spaghetti, Cafe Zappa is South Melbourne's lunch time Mecca. Employees of the local arts, film and television companies swarm for the filled panninis, fabulous pizza slices, hearty soups, and the legendary daily specials, a dish fresh from the kitchen, perhaps lasagne on Friday, or fisherman's basket on Wednesday, but it's Thursdays have diary notes. This is the day that owner Michael Sergi's dad makes his gnocchi, light, fluffy slippery pillows of potato, perhaps served with a chicken and tomato ragu. There are seats out on the pavement and a little room between the servery and the kitchen with tables, chairs and cushions, that not only looks like an Italian Mamma's kitchen, but smells like one too. The service is friendly and the food is not only luscious, but it's cheap too!

The Age Cheap Eats 2008 "It feels like everyone knows everyone else at Zappa - or soon will, such is the warmth of the welcome at this offbeat, Frank Zappa-lovin' cafe"

The Age Cheap Eats 2006 When a picture of Pope Benedict As blue-tacked next to a framed Frank Zappa, you know you're in a kooky caff. And things can get kookier when you realise this homey place is so cramped that staff may shuffle you about in order to fit newly arrived patrons.

The Age Cheap Eats 2005 "HOME-MADE fare served quickly, cheaply and with Italian brio has kept this place popular with South Melbourne's with-it crowd for more than six years."

The Age Cheap Eats 2004 "AS the late, great Frank Zappa once said, Sometimes you get your inspiration from chicken, sometimes you get it from coffee.' The cafe named in his honour provides brain-fuel for a crowd of regulars"

The Age Cheap Eats 2004,Somewhere we can highly recommend,Excellent breakfasts,'provides brain-fuel for a crowd of regulars, greeted by name by the friendly staff.Free lunchtime massages on Wednesdays and Fridays keep them coming.'

The Age, Epicure, Unexplored Territory, Matt Preston, 25/2/03. Good, honest cafe food including home-made pasta dishes and pre-made pide sandwiches and baguettes. Does incredible gnocchi
