Mietta's Review
On the banks of the river in South Yarra is Kanteen - a few table and a tent surround a strategically placed amenities block. Give our desperation for health and then the need to recover from its quest this fabulous outdoor cafe next to jogging and cydling tracks does a roaring (or for some, gasping) trade. Coffee, breakfasts, filled breads and a hot dish or two, modestly priced can allay the pain and allow a virtous glow of self congratulation to take over.

Other published opinions

The Age Cheap Eats 2008 "Once an amenities block camouflaged by reeds, this busy pit stop has a prime possie in a scenic nape of the Yarra River"

The Age Cheap Eats 2007 "On a curly kink of the Yarra River is the freshly renovated Kanteen a far cry from its original incarnation as a toilet block. It's so cleverly designed you almost forget you're inside."

The Age Cheap Eats 2006 This leafy riverside spot is undergoing some hefty changes: a major renovation ... a new Aga stove and plans for on-site cooking classes make this former amenities block much more than a quick fuel stop.

The Age Good Food Guide 2006 Outdoor Seating "Perched on a plum riverside location opposte Herring Island, Kanteen has a casual weekend exuberance and quality cafe fare, from hearty soups to toasted pide, that makes it popular with joggers, cyclists and even rowers."

The Age Cheap Eats 2005 "A CLUTCH of tables around a brown amenities block mightn't sound too inviting, but Yarra views, fresh air, friendly staff and a come-as-youare vibe make Kanteen a thriving pit stop."

The Age Cheap Eats 2004,Excellent breakfasts,Somewhere really special,'It's just a brick toilet block and change room attached to a clear plastic marquee with a gravel floor, but this quirky fuel stop with a Yarra view is latte central for bike riders, dog walkers and pram pushers.Eating options are limited and casual'

The Foodies' Guide 2004,Allan Campion & Michelle Curtis,'It's one of the most beautiful breakfast spots in Melbourne:perced on the edge of the Yarra with Herring Island as a backdrop. This cafe does a roaring trade with morning tucker, soups and filled pides and supplies rich coffee all day long.'

The Age, Agenda, 16/5/04,Roslyn Grundy,'There are plans to redevelop this site to take better advantage of its unparalleled Yarra views. But it seems a shame to spoil the simplicity of this groovy cafe-in-a-dunny-block. Gas heaters, plastic awnings and soup keep out the chill, and the barista brews mean a coffee, served cooler than usual so you can toss it down quickly.'

Herald Sun, Sunday Magazine, 21/3/04, Jane Hutchinson,'A melt with egg, cheese, tomato, ham or pastrami is a treat. From $6.50'

The Age, Epicure, 24/2/04, Nikki Fisher,' Black sticky rice $8.50. It's gratigyingly grainy, filled with coconut flavour and a soft palm-sugar sweetnessess.A dish like this stands out on a breakfast menu. And when it tastes like this, so it should.'
