Mietta's Review
Located at Southbank in the heart of the Melbourne tourist district, this is a very comfortable restaurant. Its soaring windows afford a great view over the Yarra River and across Melbourne's skyscrapers. The food is excellent, predominantly Cantonese dishes with flares of exotica. The service is refined and attentive, the wine list expansive, and the yum cha is the best around. A great place to show off the city to tourists - at a price- at a price.

Herald Sun Stephen Downes, 17-11-09 Score: 41/50 "Like a great shiraz, Red Emperor just gets better with age. I last revoewed this Southgate champion five years ago. In the interim, its food has become even more refined, the notion of culinary complexity best manifest in firm flavours of the greatest subtlety. There are also wonderful textural contrasts. Service is impeccable, but the decor is tired and their vinyl upholstery, though comfortable enough, doesn't match the gastronomy"

Gourmet Traveller 2010 Australian Restaurant Guide "With views of water and skyscrapers beyond the steamer-laden trolleys trundling by, it doesn't require a great leap to imagine yourself taking yum cha in Kowloon rather than beside the Yarra"

Courier Mail Food and Wine Guide 2009 Queensland "Sunday yum cha is a Melbourne institution and while there are more stridently Cantonese places in the suburbs, none have the city and Yarra views of this bustling two-tier restaurant"

Gourmet Traveller 2008 Australian Restaurant Guide "Red Emperor's spacious, well-lit dining room overlooks the Yarra River, towards Flinders Street Station, but it's easy to doubt anyone pays the view much mind - all focus is on the food"

Herald Sun Bob Hart, 16-12-06 "CHINESE restaurants in Melbourne are the nation's best and, improbably, seem to get better every year. There are at least, a dozen examples of this phenomenon, but none better than this one at Southgate. Red Emperor has something most Chinese restaurants - even the mighty Flower Drum lack, and that's a view."

Gourmet Traveller 2006 Australian Restaurant Guide Best views "Melbourne is renowned for Cantonese restaurants and you won't do better for yum cha with a view than the consistently excellent Red Emperor at Southgate, looking across the Yarra to the city."

Gourmet Traveller 2006 Australian Restaurant Guide Best Chinese "Red Emperor doesn't have the same cachet, but food and wine are taken just as seriously if not more so - at this wellpositioned "New Territory" restaurant on the Yerra's southern banks. The dim sum here is particularly good, with selections few others attempt."
