Ah Mu Has CLOSED For Business
Mietta's Review Ah Mu looks at Australian culture from a (mostly) Malaysian angle. Its strength is its food, which is done with taste and care. It straddles the cultural divide presenting refined Asian dishes in a European manner in a modern Australian setting. The food is plated with the sauce under the meat and eaten with a knife and fork. The question for the diner is whether the two cultures work together and if not, which one presents the bill - for the smart modern Australian cafe it aspires to being, the price is fair for the quality, for an ethnic eatery (which it is not) it could seem expensive. It attracts a clientele that is Australian, a majority of which are middle aged women.
Other published opinions The Foodies' Guide 2004,Allan Campion & Michele Curtis,'One of the best Lebanese restaurants in town;the food is so honest and the menu offers many vegetarian options, but feel free to phone ahead and request special dishes, such as mjadra'at addis (lentils and rice),pumpkin kibbee patties and Lebanese gnocchi.'
The Age, Epicure, 25/11/03, John Lethlean,'score 14.5/20 The passing of time emphasises the solid value for money at Ah Mu.'

Herald Sun, weekend, eat, 8/2/03, Bob Hart. Not so much a specifically Malaysian restaurant, as one that serves up a compilation of the best dishes from Asia.
The Age Good Food Guide 2003. Best Malaysian. Score 15/20. The menu features classy updates of South-East Asian standards.

The Age epicure 12/12/2000 - Allen Woo, the longtime chef with the John Dunham/Beh Kim Un restaurants (Isthmus of Kra, Madam Fang, Shakahari) has opened his very own and very stylish new restaurant at the top of Bourke st with his business partner Julian Pang. Ah Mu means mum in Mandarin. Interior design by Kerstin Thompson, pan-Asian cuisine, Woo and Pang both hail from Ipoh, in Malaysia: their restaurant represents a modern interpretation of their home cooking, fused with Woo's years of doing Thai food at Isthmus.
