Can You Put Plastic in The Oven?

It would be best not to put plastic containers in the oven.

There’s no reason why you should put plastic in the oven in the first place because regardless of how low you set your oven temperature, no plastic can withstand such heat. Putting plastic containers in the oven will only result in burnt food and a messy sheet pan.

For the most part, there are no oven-friendly plastics.

Nonetheless, there’s a plastic container usually marketed as oven-safe; it is called CPET (Crystallized Polyethylene Terephthalate). However, with CPET, there’s a catch. CPET can only withstand a certain level of heat.

Here are more details on how limited a CPET container is.

Can you put plastic in the oven?

Putting plastic in the oven is often a disaster in waiting. We wouldn’t recommend it.

The reason is that plastic containers usually melt at high temperatures, and melted plastic will ruin your food and sheet pan.

A plastic container withstands elevated oven temperatures to a certain level. It is called CPET (Crystallized Polyethylene Terephthalate). A CPET container will hold its structure at temperatures between 32- and 400-degrees Fahrenheit. Temperatures higher than 400 degrees Fahrenheit will melt such a container.

Can you put plastic wrap in the oven when proofing dough?

You can, but plastic wrap is not an oven-safe option, especially when using the oven-preheat proofing method. Using a plastic wrap for proofing in the oven might be better when using the hot water method.

If you are hesitant about using plastic in your oven, consider using a lid or towel.

If you want to ditch the oven process altogether, electric proofing boxes and commercial proofers work just as well.

Is it safe to use an oven after burning plastic?

Yes, it is safe to use your oven after burning plastic, as long as you have thoroughly cleaned it out.

If you own a self-cleaning oven, you might still need to manually remove the burned plastic remains from your oven’s self-cleaning process.

How to tell if plastic is microwave-safe

There are three ways to tell microwave-safe plastic apart from the unsafe ones.

Check for the recycling code

Microwave-friendly plastics usually have the number 5 on them to indicate safe use in the microwave. A plastic container with five on it is made of polypropylene or PP.

Any plastic container with recycling codes of either 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, or 7 is not safe for microwave usage.

Check for the FDA microwave safety symbol

Before a plastic container is certified safe to use in the microwave, it must have undergone FDA testing and been approved based on FDA microwave safety standards.

Plastics that are microwave-safe, according to FDA approval, usually have a symbol that resembles wave lines.
